I’ll have a better YNAB review after I give their 60 day trial a try.Īnybody have any experience with their program? Have you ever spent any time in their forums? Posted by Trevor Shipp JPosted in Budget Software, Budgeting Tags: YNAB, YNAB Review, youneedabudget. The perfect companion app of YNAB (You Need A Budget) for Desktop. These are honest people who know their stuff! Feel comfortable asking any financial question I promise the advice you get is sound. Though I may never end up using YNAB to run my personal finances, I’ll ALWAYS take the advice given in their forums. Hey- it’s free that way, and I’ve never had such a good grip on my money before. I use Microsoft Excel or Google Docs to take care of my budget. Anybody out there used them? Thoughts? Typically, I’m the type that stays away from any budgeting software that requires me to pay. There are hundreds and hundres of people in their forums that absolutely SWEAR by it. I think I’ll probably end up trying the free trial to see how it works. YNAB uses a system where each month you can make adjustments as you learn what goals are realistic and which ones aren’t. Roll with the punches – You don’t create a budget carved in stone! It’s just not wise… you’ll be changing it frequently. You’ll always have some money to fall back on, and it won’t come from your credit card!Ĥ.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that running out to the mailbox to grab the mail has become something I absolutely loathe! And why? It’s full of bills! And often ones that I wasn’t expecting! If you have a lump sum of cash saved up, you won’t have to worry when that happens. Prepare for rain – Make sure you have an emergency fund saved up so you can pay for those unexpected expenses. Give every dollar a job – They use the analogy that dollars are like teenagers unless you give the STRICT guidance, they’ll own you! So it is with our money… you have to make sure that you give each of your dollars a job- this dollar pays for the gas, this one goes to the mortgage, the next one pays for groceries, etc… You shouldn’t have “left overs” at the end of the month because they’ll end up getting spent right away.ģ.

YNAB teaches to take steps in the direction of living on last month’s pay! Finally, you have room to breath finally, you get to pay your bills when they arrive because you actually have the money.Ģ. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, becoming a slave to the day they get paid. Stop living paycheck to paycheck – In other words, put yourself in a position where you’re not relying on the next paycheck to pay your bills. YNAB is built on a solid foundation of financial principles. You would think that these people actually got paid for their advice. Now, I’ve participated in different forums online before but never have a had this type of interaction before. In the space of just a couple of days, I had a bunch of people advising me on what would be best.

Not really sure what to do with the extra money or where to put it first, I went straight to the YNAB forums and asked the question. Just as an example, a few weeks ago I posted “ Dilemma… What Should I Do?.” If you don’t want to take the time to read the complete post, here’s a brief summary: basically, my wife and I are saving over $1,200 a month. Who needs a financial advisor when you can get some of the best advice for free! These YNAB forums are full of people that love offering financial advice that is actually pretty good. It’s amazing that people are willing to take time to answer random financial questions without getting something for it directly. I’ve never actually used their program, but I’ve been reading in their forums for quite some time now, and it’s turned into an extremely invaluable tool in my personal financial education.
